SEO: The Tip of the Iceberg and How I’m Paddling in the Water
I’ve always had a way with words. Words I know, and I know them well. And as a graduate writer I thought that copywriting
would be a breeze; a bit of content for a website
on the daily, how hard could it be? Turns out, very. I applied for a copywriter’s position with the faintest idea of what SEO
was and even now, waist deep and in the thick of it, I still can't say that I completely understand the ins and outs of how it works.
My basic understanding was that a webpage
that uses particular keywords
would match search results better than those which didn’t. While I wasn’t wrong, I certainly wasn’t entirely right either. The deeper I ventured into the messy and intricate world of SEO
, the more I understood just how complex the online advertising process is and how difficult it is to get it right.
I’ve now learnt that Google is my best friend. Your best friend too.
There is so much that goes into a basic search and so much more that comes out, almost all of which is owed to the webmasters at Google. Each day I’m learning the best way to work with the ever-adapting process instead of the many others who have unknowingly sabotaged their advertising campaigns by trying to outsmart the system.
Now here I am, my fifth day on the job, thinking of all the people I know whose businesses I could optimise. Who am I kidding, I’m still just scraping the surface.
